SCORCHING SUN

SCORCHING SUN

The little one lies under an acacia tree,

Dry snot and dust caked, moustache like,

Its sunken eyes dull and lifeless,

Peering into the distance with unseeing eyes,

The little one’s once chubby cheeks

Now, nothing but a haunting skull and skin.

The little one’s mother lies on the ground,

Barely breathing, clamped in death’s vice,

Her lips parched, her mouth dry,

Praying for a drop of water,

A drop that would never be.

A dust storm gathers, whirls and rages

Ripping her of her loose rags,

Parading what remains of her to all and sundry

A BAG OF BONES IN SHRIVELLED SKIN.

As the piteous duo succumb to starvation,

Impatient vultures circle smiling at the bounty

Vicious, joyous and celebratory.

An overfed lone hyena laughs from a distance

It’s a windfall for the scavengers

Hyenas and vultures dine in plenty

Though fighting, on the brink of murderous frenzy

Fighting over fresh corpses

In a far-off place,

The local mheshimiwa is a busy man,

A helicopter, rotors still turning vomits him.

He’s popular, a man of the people.

At the podium, against political enemies,

He launches vitriolic political rhetoric

Amid the crowd’s euphoric cheers and ululations.

A man of the people,

Campaigning for his presidential candidate.

In  the  capitol, at the capital,

After a weekend of draining campaigns,

Mheshimiwa hops from office to office

Ostensibly fighting for emergency funds and relief food.

The funds fatten his and cronies’ bank accounts,

The relief food is repackaged at night

New stock for their wholesale shops.

Days later,

Under an acacia tree,

The teary eyed mheshimiwa

Condoles with the ‘dying’ for the ‘avoidable untimely deaths’

Of their beloved.

Mheshimiwa  politics and castigates the inept government.

For he’s a busy man,

He boards a waiting chopper, rotors whirl as it hums to life,

Leaving the helpless folks,

Shrouded in a blanket of asphyxiating dust,

And truckloads of political promises

To feed on amidst a crippling famine.

FLAMES OF LOVE FOUND

FLAMES OF LOVE FOUND

Glistening eyes, flirting glances,

Fluttering eyelashes…

Breath deep, spread your arms,

Embrace me, Oh the palpitating hearts,

Bosoms heaving,

Heart embraces heart, eyes meet eyes

Trembly lips, kissing trembly lips…

And we hold our breaths,

The joy of newborn passion.

Kisses stoke heavenly flames

Embraces fan on sparkly celestial lights

Desires twinkles starry eyes

Hope of unending tomorrows,

Memories of unforgettable yesterdays

Endless dawns and dusks

Binding our wet kissing lips.

Envelope me in your cuddly arms,

Fall into my open arms

Let’s sail away to the isles of love

Come to me as I come to you,

Feel the flattering butterflies

The flapping of a million wings

A million multi -coloured wings

Wings of love found

CONVERSATIONS WITH MWANANCHI

CONVERSATIONS WITH MWANANCHI

Dare not demand for more mwananchi

Have you not embraced your place by now?

Desire no more mwananchi

Don’t you ever sate?

Today is my turn

And the future belongs to the youth.

Yes, I acquired another wife

Just like you and your ilk should

Mwananchi it’s not for carnal pleasure

That I got married.

The future- of your kind, the future of your own

The future of your children, the future lying in numbers and votes,

Us against them,

A battle of votes borne of children,

Marry, let’s marry mwananchi.s

Mwananchi, why does my fuel guzzler gall you?

Does a big car, for a big mheshimiwa;

A big car for a big office irk you?

Mwananchi, you sent me to a big office

To wrestle with big men-

And bring home our share of the national cake.

So you see-

I need a big car, for the big job.

The job you assigned me mwananchi.

Mwananchi I have heard the grapevine

Your whining over my fat salary has reached me

Mwananchi, yet you and yours live on my salary;

 ‘mheshimiwa, my daughters school fees…,’

‘mheshimiwa, my son’s boda boda…,’

‘mheshimiwa, my mother’s burial…’

‘mheshimiwa this, mheshimiwa that…

Do I mint money mwananchi?

The fat salary you detest, funds your

Mheshimiwa this and mheshiwa that whining.

Mwananchi, why do you complain of development?

Did I not roof your local church?

When you go for prayers and miracles next, mwanachi

The roof, look at the roof, mabati emblazoned with my name

A true testament of my commitment to your God.

Pass by your local primary school,

A stately gate- an education on my commitment.

Go to your local market;  trade in your ignorance.

A brand new boda boda shed.

What more, what more mwananchi?

Now you see,

I know what befits you,

Be a sport and let me be,

I will fight for our community,

They have eaten far too long,

It’s our time to eat.

I will wrestle for us to get big cars,

Wrestle for more security,

Mwananchi, I am your person.
